52 killed and 20 missing after ‘worst ever’ floods hit Katsina, Nigeria

At least 52 people have died and 20 are still missing after heavy rains caused severe floods in Nigeria’s northern state of Katsina over the past few days, local officials confirmed Wednesday, July 18, 2018. In the country’s south, heavy rains in the state of Ogun claimed lives of 11 people. More than 500 houses were destroyed by the flood in Katsina State, Aminu Waziri, head of the State Emergency Management Agency said today. At least 52 people have died, 27 were injured, 20 are missing and at least 5 000 are displaced.
Following the heavy rainfall on Saturday, July 15, water from the main river in the area moved in a reverse direction and came back to Jibia town, causing the flooding, state governor Aminu Masari said. Five villages in Jibia district were affected by the flood. “This is the worst natural disaster I have ever witnessed in my life. I believe this is the worst ever seen in the state,” the governor said. “The devastation caused by the heavy rains (and) flood at Kukan Danmaciji of Jibia LGA is indeed enormously overwhelming and heartbreaking.” READ MORE

Activity at Kilauea unprecedented in the past 200 years

The current eruption at Kilauea is unprecedented in scope and size in the past 200 years, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory deputy scientist-in-charge Steve Brantley said Tuesday, July 16, 2018. “What we are observing now is unprecedented in the past 200 years in terms of size and scale, but not in terms of process,” Brantley said. “This has occurred before, particularly during the 19th century when there were multiple collapses of the summit area and eruptions down in the East Rift Zone. At least one large in 1840.”
“This is also the largest sequence of collapse events that we’ve observed in the past 200 years,” he said. In the middle East Rift Zone, Puʻu ʻŌʻō erupted for 35 years. That was the longest eruption in the whole East Rift Zone in over 500 years and it probably set up the conditions that were ripe for lava or magma to be able to travel underground all the way from the summit to this area. Two quakes rock Surrey in 12 hours, Sixth in 4 weeks, Fears of “BIG ONE”

Surrey has been rocked by a 2.7 magnitude earthquake today – the second in just 12 hours. The quake was the sixth to shake the area near both Gatwick and Heathrow airports in just four weeks – and raised the unlikely spectre of a ‘Big One’ hitting London. Previous quakes have included a 2.6 magnitude tremor felt in parts of Surrey and West Sussex on June 27 and a quake measuring 2.6 recorded on June 30.
Today’s 2.7 tremor was recorded at Newdigate, which is eight miles from Gatwick and 30 miles from Heathrow, just after 1.30pm. It was less than a mile below the surface. Just hours earlier, a tremor was recorded at 4.59am at Newdigate at a magnitude of 2.0.
