Until August Father Franco De Donno, 71, was parochial vicar in the
Roman suburb Ostia. Then he decided to candidate as the local Ostia
mayor, “I follow a new vocation toward the path of social justice”, he
said before leaving the parish. De Donno received a suspension as a
priest because of his political engagement, but his superiors presented
this as a mere leave of absence. The first political issue De Donno
wants to tackle, is “the recognition and the protection of LGBT couples
and families.” Further, according to De Donno, Rome needs to promote the
visibility of homosexuals, and gay commerce and tourism.
