Müller on four cardinals’ dubia: Polarisation must be avoided
Müller on four cardinals’ dubia: Polarisation must be avoided
he Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has said in
a statement that the Congregation will not comment on the subject but
expressed his own personal view against the sacramentsbeing administered
to people in “irregular” situations
The only thing "irregular" are these heretics. They need change not us!
Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, Prefect of the Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith, has confirmed that his dicastery will not comment
on the dubia expressed by four cardinals on the Pope’s Apostolic Letter “Amoris Laetitia”,
which focus on the possibility of granting remarried divorcees access
to the sacraments, in some cases and after a process of discernment. In
an interview with Kathpress, the German
cardinal explained that the former Holy Office “acts and speaks” under
the Pope’s authority and cannot be a party to “a clash of opinions”.
Müller also said he sees a danger of “polarisation” in the Church. Pope
Francis touched on this issue in the homily he gave on the occasion of
the Consistory, celebrated on 19 November of this year: “The virus of
polarization and animosity permeates our way of thinking, feeling and
acting. We are not immune from this and we need to take care lest such
attitudes find a place in our hearts”.
The Prefect of the
Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith went on to explain that the
five “dubia” were sent to the Pope in person prior to publication and
stated that Francis could still task the Congregation with quelling the
tension. “Right now,” he added, “it is important for each of us to stay
focused and objective and not be dragged into controversies, much less
trigger these”. Müller chose not to comment on the parts of the “Amoris Laetitia” that caused “confusion” according to the four cardinals.
So
the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which speaks under the
authority and with the approval of the Pope, has not adopted a position.
What remains are texts of the synodal proposals and the post-Synodal
Exhortation “Amoris Laetitia” published by
the Pope, which cautiously opens up to the possibility – not as a right,
nor indiscriminately – of conceding the sacraments in certain cases and
after a profound process of discernment.
Finally, in the
interview, the cardinal expresses his personal opinion on the issue,
recalling that as far as communion for remarried divorces is concerned,
in 1994, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith had denied three
German bishops this possibility.
