“The Devil’s Pawn”

I danced delightfully alongside the devil with crooked smile

But could never hear hell’s song

I ate at the table of fornication yet never filled all the while

For I hadst been away from Thee for so long

Hell’s hole was deep by Thy Heart’s hole gushed out endless mercy

I was deceived by greed because only Thy Sacred Heart frees

Only therein wouldst I find a Giver, a soul’s true liberty

Yea, this River, now is wherest my heart alone is drawn

I didst not know fully, this Fortress, O’ how deep!

For my heart rather made refuge in passing years in the “lands of wrong”

I journeyed burdened by possession with heavy feet stumbling

Forgetting that only thy grace would makest my legs strong

I sank deep quickening in the seductive sands of sin

Till I lost everything but “without”, all wast still not gone

I saw the fading of a man, I saw the dark overcoming

And yet I still prayed for my heart’s new dawn

I clawed and scratched until grabbing thy gentle Hand

That extended new life, a new beginning

And like a red rose I arose out of the dirt of this life’s lawn

Yea, I am now the Eagle of the New Eve

A soldier confirmed whose training wast learned

On the Isle of silence & solitude like Saint John

Away from this world far above the sea

Within contemplating and seeing only Thee, I am withdrawn

In hope, no more to be self’s puppet            

In Faith, no more to be the devil’s pawn...
