Anti-fascists light fires at memorial rally for murdered activist in Berlin
Around 900 antifa demonstrators took to the streets of Berlin on Saturday to join an annual memorial rally for murdered left-wing activist and squatter Silvio Meier. He was killed by members of a far-right group 24 years ago at the city’s Samariterstraße subway station, where the rally began. The activists carried banners and lit fires as they marched through the streets. Some protesters got on a roof and set off fireworks. Tensions were high during the event, and two policemen were injured.
‘Students’ future for sale’: Thousands march against education cuts in London
Thousands of students, teachers and university staff took to the
streets of the British capital in what they called a national protest
against the education bill, which was earlier introduced by Teresa May’s
government.
The national demonstration, dubbed “United for Education,”
was organized by the National Union of Students (NUS) and the
University and College Union (UCU), an association of lecturers and
other staff, who want “free, accessible and quality education” for everyone.Massive anti-austerity protest in Argentina
Some
100,000 protesters marched through Buenos Aires on Friday to demand the
adoption of a bill declaring a social emergency in Argentina that
addresses rising poverty in the country. The measure aims to create a
million jobs and raise child welfare payments by 15 percent. The bill
was approved by Argentina’s upper house of parliament, the Senate,
earlier this week. If it meets support in the lower house, it would help
ease some of the austerity measures put in place by President Macri.
Thousands-strong rally for S. Korean president’s resignation in Seoul
Tens
of thousands gathered in central Seoul on Saturday to call on South
Korean President Park Geun-hye to step down. On Thursday, South Korea’s
parliament passed a law authorizing a special prosecutor to look into a
corruption scandal that is threatening Park’s presidency. She is accused
of allowing a secret confidante to manipulate power from the shadows
and amassing an illicit fortune.
Nationalists clash with police ahead of music concert in Kiev
Police
clashed with activists from the Ukrainian far-right party Svoboda on
the streets Kiev on Wednesday, as around 30 people demonstrated against a
music act which also performs in Russia. The protesters tried to keep
fans from entering the concert hall and threw eggs at them, while some
activists tried to break through police barriers. One man was taken to
hospital with serious injuries and a child suffered from tear gas
poisoning. The protesters decry the duet of Nastya Kamenskykh and
Aleksey Potapenko (also known as Potap) as well as some other Ukrainian
singers for performing in Russia. The act has already had to cancel
several concerts in Ukrainian cities because of possible aggression from
radical factions.
Protests rage in Greece during Obama visit
Thousands-strong
protests by left-wing activists hit the Greek cities of Athens and
Thessaloniki on Tuesday, during the visit of outgoing US President
Barack Obama to the country. Both demonstrations ended in fierce clashes
and scuffles, with police repelling the crowds with tear gas. Earlier
that day protesters could be seen burning and beating the US flag.
