Fatima Watch: Russia Seeking to Restore the Monarchy?
A form of government that has historically proven effective"
The Orthodox Church wants to be an active part in the possible restoration of the monarchy in Russia
Metropolitan Hilarion, head of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the
Patriarchate of Moscow, has said that the monarchy has many adherents
among the Russian faithful and the Orthodox Church is ready to "take an
active part" in the debates about its restoration.
( Efe ) "Within our Church there are people, groups of people who advocate the restoration of the monarchy , and I believe that if society matures to discuss this issue, the Church will participate actively in the debate," said the representative of the Church Russian Orthodox.
According to Hilarion, monarchy is "undoubtedly a form of government which has historically proved its efficacy and which has many advantages over other forms, such as when the ruler is elected for a certain period."
The high ecclesiastical office made these statements to the Rossiya 24 television channel when commenting on the proposal of the patriarch of Georgia's Orthodox Church , Elias II, to establish a constitutional monarchy in the Caucasian country.
In this regard, the Russian religious remarked that "today there are scarcely any absolute monarchies, whereas in constitutional monarchies the king has a rather decorative role."
"I will not give examples, but we all know countries, where the monarch can not enact a law or influence its content. Do we need a monarchy like that? I doubt that much, "said Hilarion.
For his part, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin , an exporter of the Russian Orthodox Church, said that "Russia without a monarchy has no future."
"We, of course, respect the current Constitution and do not violate it , but I am convinced that Russia has not reached the end of its historical development," he said.
Meanwhile, in the Imperial Russian House (CIR) indicated that it is premature to speak of the return of the monarchy.
"Our country has reached its highest level of development during the monarchy, but the people are not ready right now (for their restoration. We must do everything gradually," a CIR spokesman said, quoted by Russian media.
The idea of restoring the monarchy in Russia was already proposed a few months ago by the governor of Crimea , Sergei Aksionov.
On that occasion, the spokesman of the Russian Presidency, Dmitri Peskov, replied that in the Kremlin they receive these initiatives "without enthusiasm".
This year Russia commemorates the centenary of the abolition of monarchy and the beginning of the Russian Revolution.
