Fr. Voigt," Come Down and Save My Son (My Soul)!"

Come Down and Save My Son (My Soul)!
Fr. Richard Voigt

"Son,"  she said, "They have no more wine."  Jesus answered:
"Woman, what is that to me or to you?"

It means a great deal to the life of each one of us.  The wine represents the blood of Christ which is the necessary antidote to our sinful nature.  Without the shedding of this precious Blood why there would be no forgiveness of sin. (Hebrews 9:22)
It was in Cana of Galilee that this dialogue took place and it is the last time (7th) that our Lady speaks in the scriptures.  Now our Lord comes a second time to the land of Galilee.  The first recalls the fact that Jesus came down (katabaino) from heaven in order to re-bond man to God.  Now our Lord comes to raise up all souls to eternal life if they have believed and humbly submitted to His Word.

Some have confused this "ruler" with the "centurion"  but the difference is important to understand.  This "ruler" comes to Jesus lacking faith for he asks Jesus to "come down" before my son (soul) dies.  The "centurion" simply asked Jesus to say but the word and his servant boy would be healed.  This is faith in its perfection because the centurion understood that God is everywhere and all He need do is "say the word".  In the Greek text the term chosen is logos which indicates the truth that when God speaks it is done.

Our ruler (little king in the Greek text) wants Jesus to come into the boy's presence when all that is needed is a "logos" from His divine lips.  Hence Jesus corrects the majority of mankind who seek signs and wonders not faith.  This is the beginning of faith.  The man comes because his son is dying and there is no other that can save him.  Jesus at the 7th hour tells him to return home for your son (soul) lives.  On the word of Jesus the man begins his journey home.  This is the increase of faith.

Our final stage in faith is that we recognize that the grace requested has been given:
"Your son lives."  The father asks at what hour did the cure take place and the answer confirms the reality that God has acted.  It was the seventh hour and so the ruler and his whole household believed.  This is the perfection of faith.

This perfection comes about because of the virtue of humility that the little king showed in approaching Jesus and in accepting Jesus' word.  Can it be that we are but at the beginning of our faith life?  Our souls live in a cesspool of sin and they are dying to the divine grace that is required for life.  Today more than ever we must seek the "increase of faith".  Hence we must know what we believe.

Our faith is in the truth and the fact that the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity willed to enter our human flesh through the womb of the Blessed Mother in order to take this human body filled with precious blood and pour that blood out on Calvary as a sacrificial victim to re-bond our souls to the heart of God.  This is the heart of our faith.  This is baptism.  This is confession.  This is holy communion.  This is Confirmation.  The sacramental life is the life of our Lord Jesus Christ in us.  Through the sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion we increase in the supernatural life.  Our souls will be perfected with the perfection of our faith.
We trust in the divine action of God to protect us from the evil one; to heal us of our sins; and to sanctify us through His Indwelling in our souls.

Renewed in this faith we will express the fruit of faith in our charity to one another and in our desire to forgive rather than condemn.  Our souls will live because Jesus, the Divine Logos, has said so.

In the hearts of Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

Fr. Richard Voigt
