Fr. Voigt- "The Christ, Whose Son is He?'

Fr. Voigt- "The Christ, Whose Son is He?"

Whose son is the Christ?  They would not and could not answer for as St. Augustine analyzed the situation one can only answer that question is one is virtuous.  The Jew seeks only the goods of this earth while neglecting the glories of heaven.  Unless one is steeped in the love of God and the love of one's neighbor there cannot be the development of virtue.  Without the development of virtue in one's life there can be no understanding of this central spiritual theme: Whose son is the Christ?

Jew and Gentile agree that the Lord has given us the greatest of all the commandments:  Thou shall love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, thy whole soul and thy whole mind.  This is the first and greatest of laws and the second is like it:  Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.  Upon these two laws the whole old Testament is constructed.  Our lives are based upon the acquisition of a deeper Love for God and neighbor each and every day.  To increase in love is to foster the virtuous life.  How can we do this with the world, the flesh and the devil seeking to side track us with the pleasures and the powers that beckon our attention.

Apart from God and His Love we are helpless in the battle against the unholy trinity but with Christ we are capable of the impossible.  What do we need then?  We need a hero like Garcia Moreno who turned the battle against the Revolutionists on its tail for fifteen years.  His devotion to the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary stirred his soul to fight to death for the salvation of his citizens (Ecuador).  At Quito Our Lady of Good Success foretold this great Catholic leader and martyr almost 200 years before his appearance on the modern stage.  He alone knew the danger of Liberalism and the modernist mind.  A youth, infatuated with the desire for wealth and fame, accepted checks from the Jews and the masons to cut down this hero on the steps of the church in which he was praying before the Blessed Sacrament.  The conspiracy thought the people would consider them heroes for having murdered this Catholic tyrant but they were in total error.

Instead the people wept and mourned for their "father" and the "protector" who saved them from the Revolutionists.  Upon the murdered body of Garcia Moreno an answer for our secular world was found.  On the back pages of his Imitation of Christ is found Garcia's Plan for life.
It is this plan of life that all of us must study and imitate to conquer the world of revolution in which we are presently living.  I offer his words to you as an inspiration.

1. Every morning when saying my prayers I will ask specially for the virtue of humility.
2. Everyday I will hear Mass, say the Rosary, and read besides a chapter of the Imitation, this rule.
3. I will take care to keep myself as much as possible in the presence of God, especially in conversation, so as not to speak useless words.  I will constantly offer my heart to God before beginning any action.
4. I will say to myself continually:  I am worse than a demon and deserve that Hell should be my dwellling place.  When tempted, I will add:  What shall I think of this in the hour of my last agony.
5. In my room, never to pray sitting when I can do so on my knees or standing.  Practice little acts of humility, like kissing the ground, for example.  Desire all kinds of humiliations, while taking care at the same time not to deserve them.  To rejoice when my actions or my person are abused  and censured.
6. Never to speak of myself, unless it be to own my defects and faults.
7. To make every effort, by thought of Jesus and Mary, to restrain my impatience and contradict my natural inclinations.  To be patient and amiable even with people who bore me; never to speak evil of my enemies.
8. Every morning, before beginning my work, I will write down what I have to do, being very careful to distribute my time well, to give myself only to useful and necessary business.  I will scrupulously observe the laws of justice and truth, and have no intention in all my actions save the greater glory of God.
9. I will make a particular examen twice a day on my exercise of different virtues, and a general examination every evening.  I will go to confession every week.
10. I will avoid all familiarities, even the most innocent, as prudence requires.  I will never pass more than an hour in any amusement, and in general, never before eight o'clock in the evening.

Now it is up to you to consider your lives in view of a martyr's plan of life.  Write it down and review it often.  Then you will know whose Son is the Christ.  Our Lord is Lord of all lives from the fact that all lives come from Him.  He is Son of David for in His humanity he born of the virgin Mary with St. Joseph as His foster father.  He is the king of Davidic Line that will rule forever and ever.  Those without virtue and those of deny the Christ cannot understand or answer the question of Christ.  The Christ, whose son is he?

In the hearts of Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

Fr. Richard Voigt
