Three people have been killed by a virus that had until now only infected animals, sparking fears the disease could spread to more humans. Four cases of the Borna virus have been reported in Germany so far in what scientists believe is the first confirmed evidence the disease has spread to humans. It comes after three of the four reported victims received organ donations from the same patient.
A report from the European Union’s Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said: “Borna disease virus 1 has been associated with human disease in four cases in Germany resulting in the deaths of three people. “Bona virus 1 in humans occurs rarely, however considering the severity of this disease, Member States may consider adding it to the list of pathogens included in the differential diagnosis of causes of human encephalitis.” READ MORE
