Three-mile-wide 'potentially hazardous' asteroid will fly past Earth

A three-mile-wide asteroid, named after a Greek demi-God who nearly destroyed Earth, is going to buzz our planet before Christmas.

The object, named 3200 Phaethon will fly past ‘quite close’, Russian astronomers have said – stressing there’s no chance it will actually hit Earth.
Phaethon was a Greek demi-God who borrowed his father, the sun God Helios’s chariot, and nearly burnt the Earth to a cinder, before being killed by Zeus.
NASA classifies it as a ‘potentially hazardous asteroid’, but it will pass 6.4 million miles from Earth on December 17.
The Phaethon asteroid puzzles scientists because it has some features similar to a comet, with a slight ‘tail’ visible on previous passes.

It is unknown what cause the large crater to appear
The huge crater, five metres deep and three metres in diameter, appeared on Wednesday morning in the Montagnola district.

Enzo Foschi was one of the first politicians to post a picture on social media, saying: "Luckily at that moment no one was crossing the street and no one got hurt.

"Rome collapses and mayor Raggi says everything is all right."

There was no immediate reports of injuries after the giant sinkhole opened up, according to local reports.
he causes of the crater have not been identified, but according to the first findings, the continuous drainage of the waters thinned the roadside.

Experts will today check the pipes to see if the problem is related to some damaged drainage channel.

Carved up by two major fault lines, Italy has gained a reputation as one of the most earthquake prone countries in Europe.

The Eurasian and African plates meet along a line which runs through North Africa and crosses the Mediterranean near southern Italy and Greece.

As a result two main cracks - or fault lines - cut across the Italian peninsula, one running north-south along the spine of the Apennine mountains and another crossing east-west south of Rome and north of Naples.

Central Italy was hit by a devastating earhquake in August last year, which left 299 people dead.

Thousands were made homeless after the 6.4-magnitude quake struck on August 24.

As of August 30, the initial earthquake was followed by at least 2,500 aftershocks.

Mysterious booms are being heard around the world - and experts are baffled

Strange booming sounds are coming out of the sky in locations around the world – and experts are baffled as to what causes them.
Last week, residents in Alabama heard a strange ‘boom’ from the sky, with police notified about a ‘loud boom’ on Monday this week.
Police said the sound – described as the ‘Bama boom’ – shook houses near Lochbuie.
But similar sounds have been heard around the world, from Colorado to Yorkshire, with 64 reported this year, the Daily Mail reports – and other ‘booms’ were heard near Denver this month.
Experts have suggested a wide range of explantions from sonic booms to meteorites to controlled detonations of military weapons.
But the ‘Bama boom’ seems to defy explanation.
Birmingham National Weather Service tweeted: ‘Loud boom heard: we do not see anything indicating large fire/smoke on radar or satellite; nothing on USGS indicating an earthquake.’
Bill Cooke, head of NASA’s Meteroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, said, ‘No one can figure out the cause.’
‘I’m kind of skeptical it could be a (meteor) because there were no reports of a fireball. There are reports of vapour trails.’

Thousands flee as Mount Agung on Ring of Fire enters ‘eruptive’ period

Thousands of Balinese residents fled Mount Agung this week as the Bali volcano threatens to erupt on the Ring of Fire island.  Residents caught in Mount Agung’s danger zone have been fleeing in their thousands to the safer regions of the tourist hotspot.  Hastily built refugee shelters sprung up in the shadow of the volcano today, with mother and children seeking refuge. Yesterday health and safety volunteers were seen tirelessly handing out ash masks in case Bali’s tallest volcano erupts for the first time in 50 years.
Mount Agung reared its ugly head this week on Tuesday, when it spewed a thick plume of smoke over the island.  , casting a shadow of doubt on Bali’s future. Joachim Gottsmann, professor of volcanology at Bristol University, told Express.co.uk: “From what I have seen in video coverage yesterday is that a white plume was visible. “This indicates that the eruption was likely not magmatic. Many eruptions at volcanoes such as Agung start with what is called phreatic activity. READ MORE

  3. I thought I read the other day there were over 40 “live” large volcanos in the world. Truly we are in those times Our Lord said. Pray Yellowstone doesn’t blow otherwise the majority of us will all be sucking in ash.

  4. We seem to have asteroids passing “close” on a more regular basis. Any chance this is a PYSOP of NASA?
