UPDATE: More than 340 dead from deadly earthquake on Iran-Iraq border

BIG QUAKES YESTERDAY AND PERHAPS THE WORST IS TO COME NEXT WEEK

A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the Iraq-Iran border region killed over 340 people across both countries, sent people fleeing their homes into the night and was felt as far away as the Mediterranean coast, authorities reported on Monday. Iran’s western Kermanshah province bore the brunt of the temblor, with Iran’s state-run news agency reporting the quake killed 341 people in the
country and injured 5,953.


The area is a rural, mountainous region where residents rely mainly on farming to make a living. In Iraq, the earthquake killed at least seven people and injured 535 there, all in the country’s northern, semiautonomous Kurdish region, according to Iraq’s Interior Ministry. The magnitude 7.3 quake was centered 19 miles outside the eastern Iraqi city of Halabja, according to the most recent measurements from the U.S. Geological Survey. MORE 

 

Strong 5.8 magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Japan

The quake struck 218 miles (351 km) east of Sendai, Honshu, at a depth of 5.9 miles (9.5 km). The USGS initially recorded the quake as having a 6.1 magnitude but this was later downgraded to a 5.8. It is unclear yet if there was any damage to villages and towns on the east coast. It is understood the
earthquake has not triggered a tsunami warning. The Japanese Meteorological Agency said it did not believe the quake’s intensity was strong enough to cause any damage to the land. Japan is located on the Ring of Fire, faults lines in the Earth’s crust around the Pacific Ocean, which is a hotspot for earthquake activity. Powerful 6.8 Earthquake has struck Off the Coast Of Costa Rica

We are receiving reports that another powerful earthquake has just occurred. This quake has been reported off the coast of Costa Rica near the capital, San Jose. At this time we have not received any information on tsunami
warnings or alerts but will keep you up to date with the latest when we get more information. This large quake follows the deadly quake that struck Iraq earlier today resulting in the deaths of at least 100 people thus far and felt as far away as Israel.
