Powerful 6.1 Earthquake Strikes As Mexico Continues To Reel


A strong new earthquake shook Mexico on Saturday, causing new alarm in a country reeling from two still-more-powerful quakes this month that have killed nearly 400 people. The U.S. Geological Survey said the new, magnitude 6.1 temblor was centered about 11 miles (18 kilometers) south-southeast of Matias Romero in the state of Oaxaca, which was the region most battered by a magnitude 8.1 quake on
Sept. 7. It swayed buildings and set off a seismic alarm in the capital, promping civil defense officials to temporarily suspend rescue operations in the rubble of buildings downed by Thursday’s magnitude 7.1 quake in central Mexico. That quake dimmed activity in the stylish Condesa neighborhood, where young revelers typically spill out from dimly lit bars and restaurants on a Friday night. READ MORE

Mt Agung volcano in Indonesia awakens after 50 years, Thousands evacuated
6000 people have been evacuated from villages near a volcano on Bali amid fears it could erupt for the first time in 50 years. Authorities warned tourists to avoid hiking or camping within four miles (6km) of Mount Agung as tremors shook the area and smoke rose above the crater. Officials said 6,000 people
have been moved for safety reasons so far and more would follow.  Alert has been raised for Agung volcano of III to IV. Volcanic activity remains high and there are indications of magma rising to the surface and causing tremors said oficials working for the National Disaster Management Agency. READ MORE
