Our Lady Of Mount Carmel

Our Lady Of Mount Carmel
Fatima Center

A blessed Feast of OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL to you!
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the Patroness of the Carmelite Order, appeared to the saintly general superior of the Order, St. Simon Stock, on today’s date in 1251. Assuring him of Her special protection over Her Order, She directed him to institute a confraternity of the faithful dedicated to Her service and wearing Her livery, whose members would likewise experience Her unfailing solicitude for their salvation.

History of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Today, more than 700 years later, Our Lady’s promised protection is more urgently needed than ever. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel appeared to the three children of Fatima during the Miracle of the Sun on October 13, 1917, holding out a Brown Scapular. As Sister Lucy said, “Our Lady held the Scapular in Her hands because She wants us all to wear it.”

Let us remain steadfast in this beautiful devotion, showing ourselves to be ever beneath Our Lady’s mantle, particularly in these dark days which precede the promised Triumph of Her Immaculate Heart. May She hasten the day in which Her prophecy and promise to St. Dominic are fulfilled: “One day, through the Rosary and the Scapular, I will save the world!”

ST. SIMON STOCK RECEIVES THE SCAPULAR
Simon was born in England in the county of Kent, and left his home when he was but twelve years of age to live as a hermit in the hollow trunk of a tree, whence he was known as Simon of the Stock. Here he passed twenty years in penance and prayer, and learned from Our Lady that he was to join an Order not yet known in England.
He waited patiently till the White Friars came, and then entered the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. His great holiness moved his brethren in the general chapter held at Aylesford, near Rochester, in 1245, to choose him prior general of the Order.
In the many persecutions raised against the new religious Order, Simon went with filial confidence to the Blessed Mother of God. As he knelt in prayer in the White Friars’ convent at Cambridge on July 16th, 1251, she appeared before him, and presented him with the scapular in assurance of her protection.
The devotion to the blessed habit spread quickly throughout the Christian world. Pope after Pope enriched it with indulgences, and miracles innumerable put their seal upon its efficacy. The first of them was worked at Winchester on a man dying in despair, who at once asked for the Sacraments when the scapular was laid upon him by St. Simon Stock.

EPISTLE and GOSPEL
for the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
Collect • O God, Who hast honored the Order of the Carmel with the special title of Thy most Blessed Mother Mary, ever Virgin; mercifully grant that we who celebrate Her memory this day by a solemn office, may be shielded by Her protection and deserve to come to everlasting joys. Who livest and reignest...
Epistle • Ecclesiasticus 24:23-31
[The Blessed Virgin sets forth Her origin, Her dwelling, Her dignity, and Her fruits.]
As the vine I have brought forth a pleasant odor, and My flowers are the fruit of honor and riches. I am the Mother of fair love, and of fear, and of knowledge, and of holy hope. In Me is all grace of the way and of the truth, in Me is all hope of life and of virtue. Come over to Me, all ye that desire Me, and be filled with My fruits; for My spirit is sweet above honey, and My inheritance above honey and the honey-comb. My memory is unto everlasting generations. They that eat Me, shall yet hunger: and they that drink Me, shall yet thirst. He that hearkeneth to Me, shall not be confounded, and they that work by Me, shall not sin. They that explain Me, shall have life everlasting.
Gospel • Luke 11:27-28
[The holy Mother of God is blessed among women.]
At that time, as Jesus was speaking to the multitudes, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to Him: Blessed is the womb that bore Thee and the paps that gave Thee suck. But He said: Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it.

SISTER LUCY SPEAKS
About the Brown Scapular
Father Rafferty: "In some books on Fatima, some authors do not make any mention of the Scapular as a part of the message."
Sister Lucy: "Oh, they are wrong!"
Father: ''What indicated that the Virgin appeared as Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the last vision of Fatima?"
Sister Lucy: "Because She held the Scapular in Her hands. The Holy Father has said to all the world that the Scapular is the exterior sign of our consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary."
Father: "Is the Scapular therefore necessary in order to fulfill the Message of Fatima?"
Sister Lucy: "Yes."
Father: "Would you say that it is as necessary as the Rosary?"
Sister Lucy: "The Rosary and the Scapular are inseparable."

SERMON IN A SENTENCE
“Let the Brown Scapular be the sign of your consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which We are particularly urging in these perilous times.”
– Pope Pius XII

“Receive this Scapular. Whosoever dies wearing it shall not suffer eternal fire. It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace.”
– Our Lady of Mt. Carmel to St. Simon Stock
July 16, 1251

THE SABBATINE PRIVILEGE
In order to gain all the advantages promised by Our Lady of Mount Carmel through the Brown Scapular, such as the Sabbatine Privilege, it is necessary to be a Catholic, to wear the cloth scapular, and to be enrolled in the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular.
(Any priest can perform this enrollment, which only needs to be done once. As scapulars wear out and are replaced, it is not even necessary to have the new ones blessed. The prayers for enrollment in the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular can be found on page 29 of the booklet, “Our Lady’s Garment”.)
For all those who 1) are enrolled in and wear the Brown Scapular, 2) observe chastity according to their state in life, and 3) perform a prescribed work of prayers, Our Lady has promised to deliver these souls from Purgatory on the first Saturday after their death.
The "prescribed work" in the third condition above is established as the daily recitation of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin, but with the permission of a priest, the faithful may substitute a daily five-decade Rosary for the recitation of the Office.
