Scientists have warned there could be a big increase in numbers of devastating earthquakes around the world next year. They believe variations in the speed of Earth’s rotation could trigger intense seismic activity, particularly in heavily populated tropical regions.
Although such fluctuations in rotation are small – changing the length of the day by a millisecond – they could still be implicated in the release of vast amounts of underground energy, it is argued.
The link between Earth’s rotation and seismic activity was highlighted last month in a paper by Roger Bilham of the University of Colorado in Boulder and Rebecca Bendick of the University of Montana in Missoula presented at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America.
“The correlation between Earth’s rotation and earthquake activity is strong and suggests there is going to be an increase in numbers of intense earthquakes next year,” Bilham told the Observer last week.
In their study, Bilham and Bendick looked at earthquakes of magnitude 7 and greater that had occurred since 1900. “Major earthquakes have been well recorded for more than a century and that gives us a good record to study,” said Bilham.
They found five periods when there had been significantly higher numbers of large earthquakes compared with other times. “In these periods, there were between 25 to 30 intense earthquakes a year,” said Bilham. “The rest of the time the average figure was around 15 major earthquakes a year.”
The researchers searched to find correlations between these periods of intense seismic activity and other factors and discovered that when Earth’s rotation decreased slightly it was followed by periods of increased numbers of intense earthquakes. “The rotation of the Earth does change slightly – by a millisecond a day sometimes – and that can be measured very accurately by atomic clocks,” said Bilham.
Bilham and Bendick found that there had been periods of around five years when Earth’s rotation slowed by such an amount several times over the past century and a half. Crucially, these periods were followed by periods when the numbers of intense earthquakes increased.
“It is straightforward,” said Bilham. “The Earth is offering us a five-year heads-up on future earthquakes.”
This link is particularly important because Earth’s rotation began one of its periodic slowdowns more than four years ago. “The inference is clear,” said Bilham. “Next year we should see a significant increase in numbers of severe earthquakes. We have had it easy this year. So far we have only had about six severe earthquakes. We could easily have 20 a year starting in 2018.”
Exactly why decreases in day length should be linked to earthquakes is unclear although scientists suspect that slight changes in the behaviour of Earth’s core could be causing both effects.
In addition, it is difficult to predict where these extra earthquakes will occur – although Bilham said they found that most of the intense earthquakes that responded to changes in day length seemed to occur near the equator. About one billion people live in the Earth’s tropical regions.
Tsunami waves observed after 7.0 earthquake near France’s New Caledonia
A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has struck in the Pacific near the overseas French territory of New Caledonia, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reports. Tsunami waves have been observed after the quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) reports. The quake was centered 82 km (51 miles) east-northeast of Tadine, on Mare Island, which has a population of over 5,600. The epicenter was 10 km (6 miles) deep.
The numbers have been revised by USGS from earlier reports, which placed the epicenter 68 km from Tadine and 25 km deep, and reported its magnitude as 7.3. The PTWC has warned of “hazardous tsunami waves” possible for coasts within 300 km of the epicenter, which puts the Loyalty Islands archipelago, with a population of over 17,000, within range. It later issued a message saying tsunami waves “have been observed.” READ
Experts discuss warning signs of eruption
at Yellowstone super volcano
Rumors are rumbling that the Yellowstone supervolcano will erupt sooner than expected. Recent studies suggest the super-eruption will happen in a matter of decades rather than centuries, as previously thought. Scientists say a super-eruption would blanket most of the U.S. in a thick layer of ash, sending the earth into a volcanic ice age.
Many of the top researchers keeping a close eye on the caldera are right in our backyard. Seismologists at the University of Utah are working closely with geologists in Yellowstone. We took a trip to West Yellowstone to put those rumors to the test with the experts, see the video above for the full report. MORE
Strong Magnitude 6.4 Earthquake Strikes Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia
A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.4 hit the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia at 09:25 UTC (20:25 local time) on November 19, 2017. The agency is reporting a depth of 25.3 km (15.8 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.5 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). This is the 110th earthquake in this region since October 27 and the 5th above or equal to M6.0. According to the USGS, the epicenter was
located 74.9 km (46.5 miles) E of Tadine (population 7 492) and 157.1 km (97.6 miles) ESE of Wé (population 10 375), New Caledonia. There are about 5 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles). Some 1 000 are estimated to have felt moderate shaking. Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, PTWC said. READ MORE
DEVELOPING: Mystery Blasts Rattling The Globe Leaving Experts Baffled
Was it a supersonic aircraft? A meteor? A ground explosion? The end of the world as we know it? Those are the questions experts and non-experts around the world are asking themselves in recent weeks as curiously loud mystery BOOMS have not only been heard around the world but felt – shaking buildings and rattling nerves from Alabama to Michigan, Idaho to California, Russia to Denmark. The Alabama
boom last Tuesday at 1:39 CST was heard and felt through 11 counties, but an earthquake event has been ruled out. The day after Alabamans were shaken by that incident, something similar occurred in Idaho. No explanation has been forthcoming from law enforcement officials there. Then, last Saturday, much the same thing was reported in Michigan, according to various local newscast. Still no explanation. READ MORE
Huge hole opens up in Brazilian soybean field; depth unknown
Residents of a farm in Coromandel in Alto Paranaíba were surprised by a geological phenomenon last week. A giant hole, which would have been about 20 meters in diameter, appeared on a soybean plantation. Scientists from the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU) were there and said that it might be a sinkhole.
Fazenda Santa Cruz is 30 kilometers from the city. According to the owner, Diogo Tudela, the hole opened between 5 and 6 November and was discovered by a resident. "You can not imagine the size of the hole," he said. The land was recently planted with soybeans. The phenomenon had never occurred on the property before. "That's why we sought out experts to answer our questions. Then we learned that there are already records in the region of this event, "he explained.
The farm owner hired a photographer with a drone to take the images. They believe that the diameter is 15 or 20 meters, and they Could not calculate depth yet.
Adriano dos Santos explained that the sinkhole appears because of a dissolution of limestone rocks, which are common in that region. The formation of sinkholes involves natural processes of erosion or gradual removal of slightly soluble bedrock (such as limestone) by percolating water, the collapse of a cave roof, or a lowering of the water table.
Sinkholes often form through the process of suffosion. For example, groundwater may dissolve the carbonate cement holding the sandstone particles together and then carry away the lax particles, gradually forming a void.

Something has just changed in Earth's atmosphere. This week alone atmospheric compression events deluge Greece and Italy with once in a multi-century floods, feet of snow, winter storms a few weeks before summer in South Africa, November typhoon out of season far far south near Cambodia, UK colder than Moscow and 14 locations have been chosen for geoengineering programs to begin in our atmosphere.
The New Madrid Fault may take out 150 miles of the Midwest
Way back in 1811 and 1812, a series of over 1,000 earthquakes rocked the Mississippi River between St. Louis and Memphis. One was so powerful that it caused the river to run backwards for a few hours. The infamous New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812 rang church bells in Boston, which is 1,200 miles from St. Louis. Today, scientists say that the 150-mile-long New Madrid Seismic Zone has a terrifying 40% chance to blast in the next few decades, impacting 7 states – Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi – with 715,000 buildings damaged and 2.6m people left without power.
Unlike California, which has been super-prepared since the last major earthquake hit hard enough to delay the World Series, the New Madrid fault area has been sitting blissfully by. In case the “40 percent” statistic didn’t bother you, this should: The New Madrid fault has an impact zone ten times as big as its more famous San Andreas cousin.
As described by USGS: “In 1811, the extent of the area that experienced damaging earth motion, which produced Modified Mercalli Intensity greater than or equal to VII, is estimated to be 600,000 square kilometers. However, shaking strong enough to alarm the general population (intensity greater than or equal to V) occurred over an area of 2.5 million square kilometers.”
Citizens from all of the bordering states on the fault are totally unprepared, and the infrastructure is decades overdue for some quakeproofing.
So my best advice if you live in this dangerously seismic active area of the United States is to have an earthquake plan, if you still don’t have one. And don’t wait too long, the next New Madrid Earthquake is slowly but surely building up!
