WE HAVE MOVED!

"And I beheld, and heard the voice of one eagle flying through the midst of heaven,
saying with a loud voice: Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth....

Fr. Campbell- A Herd of Wild Horses

A Herd of Wild Horses

Father Campbell

“The fruit of the Spirit is: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, long-suffering, mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity. Against these things there is no law. And they who belong to Christ have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires” (Gal.5:22-24).

Why is the world so corrupt? Because it lacks the spiritual gifts that are given only to those who have faith. Many of us are still children of this world. We have not “put on the new man, which has been created according to God in justice and holiness of truth” (Eph.4:24). The children of this world are not equipped to understand spiritual things. St. Paul explains:

“But the sensual man does not perceive the things that are of the Spirit of God, for it is foolishness to him and he cannot understand, because it is examines spiritually. But the spiritual man judges all things, and he himself is judged by no man. For ‘who has known the mind of the Lord, that he might instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ” (1Cor.2:14-16).

Those who do not have the mind of Christ have the mind of this world, which is the mind of the devil. They are part of the corrupt world, pawns of the devil, until they end up in Hell with him. They must WAKE UP NOW! Without Our Lord their situation is BEYOND HOPE.

The children of this world don’t believe in the spiritual gifts. They don’t believe in the Christian life. To them there is only the natural. Our own St. Jude describes them:

“But these men deride whatever they do not know; and the things they know by instinct like the dumb beasts, become for them a source of destruction… These men are stains on their feasts, banqueting together without fear, looking after themselves; clouds without water, carried about by the winds; trees in the fall, unfruitful, twice dead, uprooted; wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom the storm of darkness has been reserved forever” (Jude 10,12,13).

Our human nature is like a herd of wild horses that must be captured and tamed. And Our Lord has given us the means to do it through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Sacraments. The Lord made His Church a rock of constant truth, like a boat that travels safely over the tossing waves of the ocean. Those who wish to be saved must climb into the boat, the Holy Catholic Church, which always believes and teaches what the Lord taught. We need not feel trapped. We can change if we ask the Lord for the gifts that we need. And we must persevere in prayer every day of our lives. Our Lord tells us:

“Ask and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it shall be opened” (Mt.7:7,8).

St. Paul talks about two diverging paths, one leading into the spiritual realm, the other into the unspiritual, or carnal (Gal.5:16-24). There is a struggle, he says, between the spirit and the flesh. By “the flesh” he does not mean the body, but our wounded human nature which, after the Fall, is incapable of doing works which are pleasing to God. By “the spirit” (in this context) he means human nature after it has been “born again of water and the Spirit” (Jn.3:5). Its good works are then meritorious and pleasing to God as long as mortal sin is avoided and the state of grace maintained through prayer and the mortification of the senses.

It is true that all human beings are capable of good on the natural level, because they possess the natural virtues in some degree or other, but their good works do not merit a supernatural reward. Human nature must be healed and raised to the level of the supernatural. But scandal plagues the worldly church. Our Lord gives a stern warning:

“Woe to the world because of scandals! For it must needs be that scandals come, but woe to the man through whom scandal does come! And if thy hand or thy foot is an occasion of sin to thee, cut it off and cast it from thee! It is better for thee to enter life maimed or lame, than, having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. And if thy eye is an occasion of sin to thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee! It is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell-fire” (Mt.18:7-9).

“Walk in the Spirit,” says St. Paul, “and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you would.” He adds, most importantly, “They who belong to Christ have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, by the Spirit let us also walk” (Gal.5:25).

The supernatural is above the natural, unattainable by unaided human effort. Unlike blood or brains, it is not an integral part of our human nature. It is not in the genes. The greatest gift is Sanctifying Grace, a God-given gift that comes through Baptism, making us children of God who are capable of pleasing Him. That’s why we must pray, pray, pray for what we need. Pray the Rosary daily! Our Holy Mother, Mary Immaculate, is at war with the devil, constantly working to bring her children to Heaven to spend their eternity with her Divine Son, Jesus Christ and all the saints. Time passes swiftly. Don’t delay until your time runs out! St. Paul’s advice to Timothy is for us:

“But thou, O man of God, flee these things; but pursue justice, godliness, faith, charity, patience, mildness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on the life eternal, to which thou hast been called… I charge thee in the sight of God, who gives life to all things, and in the sight of Christ Jesus, who bore witness before Pontius Pilate to the good confession, that thou keep the commandment without stain, blameless until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1Tim.6:11,12a,13,14).
