I wanted to relate to you something that happened while I was at a seminar for health professionals in Syracuse, NY.  The topic of the all day seminar was Nutrition and the Immune System.  I go to these seminars for professional credit for my nursing license.  I don’t get out very often to go to these seminars and I thought the topic was interesting. I traveled one hour to get there.

Hundreds of thousands of men, women and young people of almost every age took to the mat across the globe on Wednesday for a yoga session to mark the 3rd International Yoga Day. Rains failed to dampen the spirits of about 50,000 who joined an outdoor yoga session, June 21, with Indian prime minister Narendra Modi in a park in Lucknow, capital of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

In 2016, over 36.7 million Americans practiced Yoga, spending well over $16 billion dollars on yoga products such as mats and other accessories. But in the midst of this ever-popular form of exercise there have been some voiced concerns from the Catholic Church. 

Pope Francis has been quoted during a daily homily in Casa Santa Marta saying, "You can follow thousands of catechism courses, thousands of spirituality courses, thousands of yoga or zen courses and all these things. But none of this will be able to give you the freedom as a child (of God).” He said only the Holy Spirit can provide the peace sought through this form of meditation.

In a piece criticizing Benedictine College of Kansas for its plans to rename a yoga class and change the content to ensure the class focuses only on physical exercise and not spiritual or cultural elements—a perfectly appropriate action for a faithful Catholic college—The World Hindu News exposes several other Catholic colleges and universities that have yoga classes apparently without due caution.

The Pantheist Character of Yoga

As mentioned  in the last article, Yoga is incompatible with Catholic spirituality because it is pantheist (claiming that God is everything and everything is God), and holds that there is only one reality and everything else is illusion. If there is only one absolute reality and everything else is illusory, there can be no relationship and no love.
