A long-duration C1.5 solar flare erupted from geoeffective Active Region 2699 on February 12, 2018. The event started at 00:15, peaked at 01:35 and ended at 03:21 UTC. A G1 - Minor geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for February 15.

A stunning new Nasa image shows an extremely rare pattern streaming from the sun at close to 7,000 miles per hour (11,200 km/h). A dark snake-like filament can be seen erupting from the star, but while the formations are normally stretched out like a strand, this one is circular like a whirlpool. This is because it is being yanked back by the star’s staggering gravitational pull – which is about 27.9 times that of Earth.

 During a solar minimum, certain types of activity, such as sunspots and solar flares will drop - but NASA also expects the development of long-lived phenomena including coronal holes.

The sun's magnetic field weakens during solar minimums, thus providing less shielding to the earth. With our protective shield thus weakened, the number of galactic cosmic rays that reach the earth's upper atmosphere increases.

Yesterday, an explosion on the sun’s eastern limb hurled a twisted plume of debris more than 250,000 km above the solar surface. NASA’s orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the blast.

A tornado of magnetized plasma became unstable when the twister twisted a bit too much. Magnetic fields crissed, crossed, and exploded in a process known as “magnetic re-connection.”  The flying debris will not hit our planet; the blast was too far off the sun-Earth line.

An elongated coronal hole stretching across the face of the sun sent solar wind particles gushing toward Earth last week. 

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory has revealed a stunning animation of the phenomenon, showing the massive dark patch marring the surface of our star.

Space-weather forecasters warned that the resulting geomagnetic storm, while minor, could have some effects on satellites and the power grid.

And, the activity brought breathtaking auroras dancing across the sky in the higher latitudes.
