A group of 11 Catholics were arrested by Belgian police for praying the rosary during a service commemorating the Protestant Reformation at the Catholic Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels on Saturday, according to local media.

The Protestant worship service was led by Pastor Steven Fuite, president of the United Protestant Church of Belgium, with the “active participation” of Cardinal Jozef De Kesel, archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels, and by numerous other religious and civic leaders. Fuite preached a sermon at the event, and a collection was made to raise money for two Protestant organizations.

October 13, 2017 – the 100^th anniversary of the great Miracle of the Sun at Fatima – came and went with nary a mention from the Holy See.

Two days earlier, however, during his general audience, Francis did say:

Next Friday, 13 October, the centenary of the last Marian apparitions in Fatima will come to an end … I invite all, especially in this month of October, to pray the Holy Rosary for the intention of peace in the world.

In isolation, this call for the faithful to pray the Holy Rosary is laudable.
Then again, let’s not kid ourselves.

The feast was fixed for the first Sunday in October by Pope Clement XI., in perpetual commemoration of a celebrated double victory gained by the Christians at Lepanto, in 1571, under Pope St. Pius V., and at Belgrade, under Pope Clement XI., through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, who had been invoked by saying the Holy Rosary. It is at the same time the principal feast of the Arch-confraternity of the Holy Rosary. In 1885 Pope Leo XIII., ordered the Rosary to be recited every day during the month of October in every parish church and cathedral throughout the world, and those of the faithful who cannot be present at this recital he exhorted to say it with their families or in private.

Noteworthy also is how the Associated Press covered the event: “some felt,” the AP intoned, that the event “had anti-Muslim overtones.” Why? Because “the event also commemorated the huge 16th-century naval battle of Lepanto, when a Christian alliance acting on the wishes of the pope defeated Ottoman Empire forces on the Ionian Sea, ‘thus saving Europe from Islamization.’”

Polonia semper fidelis, “Poland (is) always faithful” is one of the mottoes of the Polish nation, dating back to 1658 when Pope Alexander VII declared the city of Lwów (Lviv) to be so, after the inhabitants’ heroic efforts in defending Christian Europe from Muslim invasion. Fabio Marchese Ragona, who is the curator of the Stanze Vaticane blog, wrote, “During an exorcism, Fr. Amorth had asked the devil when he would leave the possessed girl’s body. The devil replied that he would remain until December 8. This turned out not to be true, and when Fr. Gabriele reproached him for the lie, the devil said in reply, ‘Haven’t they ever told you I’m a liar?” (Faro di Roma, September 2016).
