O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom only one thing is impossible, and this is, not to feel compassion for miserable sinners, have pity on us, miserable sinners, and grant us the grace which we ask Thee through the Immaculate Heart of She who is Thy tender Mother, and also ours.

O Holy Virgin, moved by the painful uncertainty we experience in choosing the true and the good,
we cast ourselves at thy feet and invoke thee under the sweet title of Our Lady of Good Counsel.

We beseech thee: come to our aid at this moment in our worldly sojourn when the twin darkness-es
of error and evil plot our ruin by leading minds and hearts astray.

O Seat of Wisdom and Star of the Sea, enlighten the victims of doubt and of error
so that they might not be seduced by evil masquerading as good;
strengthen them against the hostile and corrupting forces of passion and sin.

Mother of Good Counsel, obtain for us from thy Divine Son the love of virtue and the strength to choose, in doubtful and difficult situations, the course agreeable to our salvation.
Supported by thy hand, we shall thus journey without harm along the paths
taught us by the word and example of Jesus, Our Savior,
following the Son of Truth and Justice in freedom and safety across the battlefield
of life under the guidance of thy maternal Star,
until at length we come into the harbor of salvation to enjoy with thee unalloyed and everlasting peace.

MOST BLESSED and afflicted Virgin, Queen of Martyrs, who didst stand generously beneath the cross, beholding the agony of thy dying Son; by the sword of sorrow which then pierced thy soul, by the sufferings of thy sorrowful life, by the unutterable joy which now more than repays thee for them; look down with a mother’s pity and tenderness, as I kneel before thee to compassionate thy sorrows, and to lay my petition with childlike confidence in thy wounded heart. I beg of thee, O my Mother, to plead continually for me with thy Son, since He can refuse thee nothing, and through the merits of His most sacred Passion and Death, together with thy own sufferings at the foot of the cross, so to touch His Sacred Heart, that I may obtain my request,

Here pause and name the favours which you are asking Our Sorrowful Mother to obtain for you through this Novena. (Let your secondary intention be to pray for the intentions of all the people making this Novena anywhere in the world. Thus a great mass prayer for all Novena intentions will arise to Our Blessed Mother.)

For to whom shall I fly in my wants and miseries, if not to thee, O Mother of mercy, who, having so deeply drunk the chalice of thy Son, canst most pity us poor exiles, still doomed to sigh in this vale of tears? Offer to Jesus but one drop of His Precious Blood, but one pang of His adorable Heart; remind Him that thou art our life, our sweetness, and our hope, and thou wilt obtain what I ask, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

But the latter, turning His face from her in displeasure, said that Catherine was ugly, because she had not been baptized. Catherine awoke, and, while thinking over her dream, she was inspired by Heaven to resolve to become a Christian.
