Next year’s Amazon synod is coming into focus, after Francis named an 18-person preparatory committee to help draw up the synod’s agenda.
The official theme is “Amazonia: new pathways for the Church and for an integral ecology”, and it will address the difficulties of a region troubled by poverty, environmental destruction and a lack of clergy to cover a vast area.

Francis considers a discussion of married priests as meaningful. It was necessary to think about the opening of the priesthood for so-called "viri probati", that is, marriages and family members who were tried and tested, said Franziskus in the interview of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit (March 9). Francis may soon fulfill the Brazilian bishops' special request to allow married priests to resume their priestly ministry, liberation theologian Leonardo Boff said in a Dec. 25 interview in the German daily Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger.
"The Brazilian bishops, especially the pope's close friend Cardinal Claudio Hummes, have expressly requested Pope Francis to enable married priests in Brazil to return to their pastoral ministry," Boff said. "I have recently heard that the pope wants to fulfil this request — as an experimental, preliminary phase for the moment confined to Brazil."

The 2018 synod of Catholic bishops will focus on “Youth, faith and vocational discernment” rather than priestly celibacy.

The Vatican announced the theme of the 2018 synod Thursday, saying that Pope Francis agreed to the theme in consultation with bishops’ conferences, the Eastern Catholic Churches, and “having listened to the suggestions of the Fathers of the last synodal assembly.”
