Although it is a subject of great interest to me, I have been put off from talking about the Byzantine Empire because, in the past, it has invariably aroused bitter partisan vitriol that is completely unhelpful at best and detrimental at worst. Nonetheless, I can refrain no longer because this is an extremely important subject that people really need to know more about.

Abstract: This article reviews the battle tactics prescribed by the author of the Praecepta Militaria (ca. 965) for the use of infantry facing cavalry. This text and set of tactics were chosen for study because of the light they shed on the author’s efforts to combine the recommendations of earlier military textbooks (especially the Sylloge Tacticorum, ca. 950) with his own expertise in developing and presenting his defensive system. The development of infantry tactics did not end with the Praecepta, however, for the second version of this work included in the Tactica of Nikephoros Ouranos (ca. 1000) shows us that further adjustments were deemed necessary in order to maintain the shifting balance between infantry and cavalry throughout the later tenth century.

In the first part, we mentioned the globalization programme set up by A. Dulles, the director of the CIA, in 1945: “We shall imperceptibly replace their values by stealth with false ones and shall force them to believe in these false values…” In the ecclesiastical field, this purpose was served by Vatican Council II (1962-65) through so-called aggiornamento, “Strasbourg Memorandum” through its self-destructive programme for Christianity (2014), Great Council in Crete (2016) through so-called ecumenism promoting pan-heresies of neo-modernism and syncretism with paganism. Having promulgated the Treaty of Lisbon (2009), the EU destroys the Christian roots of Europe through legislation promoting homosexualism and gender ideology.

Speaking about repentance, Jesus emphasized twice: “Unless you repent, you will all perish!” And He continued with the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree: “Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.’” (Lk 13:1-9) This parable concerns you too. Jesus gives you a chance this year also, in this Lenten time. Unless you bear fruits worthy of repentance, you will suffer the same fate as the barren fig tree. You will be cut down, thrown out of God’s vineyard and thrown into the fire.

In 672 three great Muslim fleets were dispatched by the Muslim Caliph, Mu'awiya; to clear the sea lanes and prepare for a Muslim army to besiege the storied capital of the Byzantine Empire: Constantinople. Methodically moving up the Anatolian coast and into the Aegean, they wintered at Smyrna in 673. Entering the Hellespont (Dardanelles) in 674, the Arab armada landed at Cyzicus on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmara. A base was established, and from here the Arab fleets attempted to blockade Constantinople and support the Arab land forces arriving opposite the city, after crossing Anatolia.
