More earthquakes continue to rock the Globe as reports are indicating that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 struck in the sea off eastern Russia on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.


The epicenter of the quake was 41 km (25 miles) east Nikol’skoye, Komandorskiye Ostrova, at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), the USGS said. There were no immediate tsunami warnings issued after the quake. READ MORE

The earthquake which hit Alaska yesterday and today and the flurry of massive aftershocks highlights the very real risk to millions of Americans in California and the entire western seaboard.  Quake expert Michael Kendall of the University of Bristol warned of the “very active” state of the tectonic boundary off the coast of the US state. And he added experts had spotted the Mount Cleveland volcano in Alakasa showing “increased activity” before yesterday’s huge earthquake.
And he said the fact the Alaskan earthquake coincides with added volcanic activity nearby could be a sign that the earth is entering a phase of increased seismic activity – with attendant risk to the millions living in Western USA. Professor Kendall of the university’s Earth Sciences department told Express.co.uk said: “The Cleveland volcano was actually showing increased activity before this earthquake. “We have to remember this is a very active geological boundary.” READ MORE

DEVELOPING: Earthquake swarm in progress along the coast of Australia

A seismic swarm is in progress along the coast of northern New South Wales, Australia since Friday, January 19, 2018, raising fears that a bigger earthquake might hit the region. Authorities say that while they can’t rule out a bigger one, they don’t see it likely. From 22:50 UTC on January 19 to 08:08 UTC on January 24, Geoscience Australia registered a total of 21 earthquakes along the coast of NSW, between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour, with magnitudes ranging from 1.8 to 4.2 and depths up to 10 km (6.2 miles).
The strongest so far was M4.2 at a depth of 10 km with epicenter located just off the coast of Nambucca Heads. The quake hit at 02:28 UTC on January 24 (13:28 local time). There are no reports of injuries and no threat of a tsunami. Locals reported minor damage (cracked walls) and said the shaking lasted between 10 and 15 seconds. “It’s not unusual to get a swarm of earthquakes when stresses exceed the strength of the rock,” Geoscience Australia said, adding that they continue to receive felt reports from Scott’s Heads (south of M4.2 earthquake). DEVELOPING: More earthquakes strike along Ring of Fire as seismic surge continues

More earthquakes have hit along the Ring of Fire – and there may be hundreds more to come. In the last few days, earthquakes have also brought terror to Alaska, Papua New Guinea, Mexico, Indonesia, Hawaii and Chile while Japan has seen the spectacular eruption of Mount Kusatsu-Shirane – all of which are on the terrifying Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is the largest and most active fault line in the world, stretching from New Zealand, all around the east coast of Asia, over to Canada and the USA and all the way down to the southern tip of South America.
And in the last 24 hours, scores more earthquakes have hit the zone. Chile was hit by a strong 5.4 magnitude tremor at 7.45 GMT, while California and Alaska have also been struck since midnight. As a result of the non-stop activity experts are worried something unusual is happening. Meteorologist for Fox News, Dan Amarante, posted on Twitter: “Boy, it’s been an active few days in the Pacific Ring of Fire. 78 quakes reported near Kodiak after powerful Earthquake strikes off coast of Alaska

The 7.9 magnitude Alaska earthquake has been followed by 78 large aftershocks in a surge of seismic activity along the Ring of Fire. According to United States Geological Survey (USGS) data, more than 70 smaller tremors have rocked the Gulf of Alaska in the hours since yesterday’s quake, which was the joint seventh-largest earthquake ever recorded in the region.
The first major aftershocks came just 15 minutes after the 7.9-quake struck at 12.31am local time (9.31am GMT) on Tuesday, with the largest measuring 5.6 on the moment magnitude scale. Most of the tremors that followed were recorded in the same localized area but are unlikely to have been felt by humans because of the area’s distance to any populated areas. The vast majority of the tremors that followed measured between 2.5 and 4.5 on the Richter scale. READ MORE
