The Earth Is Shaking Violently – USGS: Major Earthquakes Over the Past 30 Days

Why is the crust of the Earth shaking so violently all of a sudden? Over the past 28 days, there have been 14 major earthquakes globally. Scientists say there has been an above average number of significant earthquakes worldwide in less than one month period.

It is important to keep in mind that a magnitude 8.0 earthquake would be many, many times larger than the earthquake that hit Indonesia yesterday.

A devastating 6.5-magnitude earthquake has struck Indonesia Wednesday which killed at least 102 people and 136 seriously injured, according to Indonesia’s Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency.

Large earthquakes are relatively common in Indonesia, which sits on the infamous Ring of Fire, a set of fault lines that circle the Pacific Basin. Wednesday’s earthquake is Indonesia’s second major temblor this year and the most severe yet.

Tsunami warnings issued after powerful 7.7 quake strikes off Solomon Islands’ coast

A tsunami warning has been issued for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and Nauru after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck 70km off the Solomon Islands, according to USGS. The USGS initially reported the quake as 8.0, but later downgraded it to 7.7. “Hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within the next three hours along some coasts of Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, New Caledonia, Tuvalu and Kosrae,”
stated the warning issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. A tsunami watch has been also issued for all Hawaiian islands, the US National Weather Service reported. The center called on the government agencies responsible for dealing with emergency situations to “take action to inform and instruct any coastal populations at risk in accordance with their own evaluation.” READ MORE
